With the ground coated in a new layer of frost and the thermometer showing a chilly 3 degrees Celsius this morning, there could be no mistaking the fact that Kamikochi’s brisk Autumn weather is moving in the direction of winter. Set against the early morning light, it makes for a serene and even pleasing picture…assuming you haven’t forgotten your coat and hat.
At this time of year, there is a dramatic difference between frigid early mornings and much warmer mid-days. This is why it’s always a good idea to prepare multiple layers of clothing so that you can add a layer or remove a layer as the temperature requires. Even during the daylight hours, the weather can go from pleasantly brisk to uncomfortably cold in a short time when the wind picks up or the sun disappears behind the clouds. A warm thermal undershirt is always a good idea. Fleeces and wind-repelling shells are also a must with a rain resistant outer being essential for anyone planning a hike.
The autumn leaves are still on the trees for all to enjoy, but with the countdown to winter now on, they are clearly living on borrowed time. If you’re trying to decide on a good day to visit, the best way to ensure that you have a comfortable and enjoyable stay is to check the weather regularly. Don’t trust that long-term forecast you read last Wednesday and such reports are only reliable up to a point.
Lastly, a quick reminder that the end of the season will soon be upon us when the closing ceremonies are held on November 15th. After that, you will no longer be able to access Kamikochi by bus or taxi, so get in while you can!
