Late Winter Mailbag

A hearty hello to all of our loyal readers around the globe!

As I write this post, winter-like conditions persist in Nagano Prefecture. A spell of warmth last week has been followed by a period of cold mornings and chilly afternoons. At 1,200m above sea level, Kamikochi remains very much in the grip of winter. Snow covers the ground as well as the majestic mountaintops.

As many of you know, Kamikochi will reopen to the public on the morning of April 17th, 2026. Till then, we still have a bit of time to plan our travels and reflect on all of the delights the new season will bring.

As usual, we've been receiving plenty of queries about the upcoming season from readers in various locations around the globe. In today's blog we'd like to share some of our answers to those questions for the benefit of our greater readership. We are of course withholding the names of these readers to protect their privacy.

Q: I am planning to Visit Kamikochi on April 18th. Will I be able to hike around the park at this time?

A: Yes, although some paths may be temporarily inaccessible due to residual snow, it is almost always possible to hike on most paths in central Kamikochi. It is difficult to predict condtions this far in advance, so please consult this post from last spring as a reference point.

Q: Which hotels will be open when the park opens to the public on April 17th?

A: As a rule of thumb, very few hotels are open on April 17th with most up and running by the official opening date of April 27th. While we don't yet know the exact opening dates for each individual business, this schedule from last year gives a fairly good indication of what to expect. Pleased be advised that we cannot guarantee the dates will be the same in 2026.

Q: How is the weather in Kamikochi in late April?

A: As with all things weather-related, it's hard to predict this far in advance. For your own convenience and safety, please prepare clothing suitable for late winter conditions. That mean's you will want a hat, a fleece or similar warm jacket, and sturdy boots for the trails. Having the option to add a layer and take one off and put it in your pack is a great way to ensure that you're neither too hot nor too cold.

Q: I couldn't secure a hotel in Kamikochi on the date that I want. Can you help with this?

A: Sorry, no. For a variety of reasons, we can't provide direct assistance with bookings. We can however recommend that you addopt a flexible outlook and keep your options open. You can, for example, take a day trip to Kamikochi while staying at accommodations in a nearby town or city.

Q: I am travelling with an older relative in a wheelchair. Do trails in Kamikochi offer barrier free options?

A: Yes! Most of the paths in central Kamikochi can be traversed by wheelchair. This map displays the barrier free routes with segmented blue lines. Some hotels also offer a wheelchair service.

And with that, we conclude today's blog. We hope to see you here when the park reopens next month. Till then, stay warm and be well.
