Midwinter Musings

Feb. 03, 2026[Uncategorized]

A hearty hello to all of our loyal readers far and wide! It's been two and a half months since we closed the door on Kamikochi's 2025 season and the long wait for the spring 2026 season began. However, today Japan marks the traditional end to the winter season as we observe setsubun.

To the casual observer, winter is still very much underway with a fresh dusting of snow occuring earlier today. One positive point to raise is that the five month wait for Kamikochi to reopen in now half-over: two and a half months down, two and a half to go!

As you may be aware, the park is currently off limits to the casual visitor. So in lieu of a traditional visit, we invite you to look longingly at these photos which were taken by interpid Five Sense blogger, Sakura, in January:

The above shots display such seasonal hallmarks as chalk-white, snowy mountains and impossibly deep azure skies.

You can enjoy some of this early in the spring season when skies remain very clear and mountains retail much of their snowy finery.

And with that, we conclude today's blog. We will return with further bulletins as the spring opening approaches. Till then, be well and stay warm.
